Equilibrium Chair
Galleria Rossana Orlandi
2018
Milan-based Italian designer Guglielmo Poletti considers the fragility of materials in his project Equilibrium Chair.
At first glance, Poletti’s striking furniture pieces appear impossible, their materials balanced together so effortlessly they appear illusory. Equilibrium Chair is no different, with its fragile appearance juxtaposed with its intended purpose, to support.
A graduate of the renowned Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands, which is famed for its experimental approach to teaching, Poletti has gone on to define a unique and individual approach to design that is anchored by his interest in the limitations of materials and, in particular, their fragility. Characterized by simplicity, Poletti’s works harness the sculptural purity of minimalism.
Formed of sanded aluminum and stainless steel, Equilibrium Chair is a unique, experimental piece that exemplifies the designer’s investigative approach to the diversity and limitations of materials. Stainless steel and aluminum are materials synonymous with strength and stability but here they appear lightweight and fragile. Poletti’s pieces harness the power of balance both visually and structurally.
